COURSE OVERVIEW

This course provides an overview of the AEC financial model, emphasizing how revenue, expenses, work-in-process (WIP), and cash flow interact over the life of a project. Participants examine the AEC cash flow cycle, the structure and purpose of income statements and balance sheets, and the differences between cash‑basis and accrual‑basis accounting. The course also introduces five core profitability truths that explain why not all revenue contributes equally to firm health, how cash discipline supports growth, and how contracts and staffing decisions affect long‑term financial performance.

  • Identify the stages of the AEC cash flow cycle and explain how WIP and accounts receivable affect liquidity.

  • Differentiate between cash‑basis and accrual‑basis accounting and evaluate when each method is appropriate for AEC firms.

  • Interpret leadership‑focused income statements and balance sheets to assess profitability, liquidity, and financial risk.

  • Explain how revenue quality, staffing, and contract terms influence sustainable profitability in AEC firms.
